Porcelain Onlays & Inlays
An onlay or inlay restoration is a custom made filling made of tooth-colored porcelain. Porcelain onlays and inlays are popular because they resemble your natural tooth. With our Planmeca CAD/CAM technology, you can now have your dental onlay or inlay fitted and placed in a single appointment—unlike the past when you had to wait weeks for the restoration to return from the lab while hoping that your temporary would last.
Onlays and inlays can both be utilized to conservatively repair teeth that have large defective fillings or have been damaged by decay or trauma. Onlays and inlays are an ideal alternative to crowns (caps) because less tooth structure is removed in the preparation process. Onlays are essentially identical to inlays with the exception that one or more of the chewing cusps have also been affected and need to be included in the restoration.
Reasons for onlay or inlay restorations:
What does getting an onlay or inlay involve?
- Dr. Kohler will remove any weakened or decayed tooth material.
- He will scan your teeth with a handheld intra-oral camera and take digital pictures to precisely sculpt and place your onlay or inlay.
- The digital model of your tooth will be transferred to a Planmeca milling unit.
- Dr. Kohler will use the milling machine to craft a custom-fitting crown that looks natural and fits well.
